SENIOR MATH LEAGUE

(For 4th through 5th grade team members)

Welcome to Senior Math League! Each week, we will introduce a different math concept. Students will have the opportunity to practice math ideas, play math games, and participate in math contests. Please register before September 13, 2024.

Practice problem sets will be divided into ‘Apprentice’, ‘Builder’, and ‘Challenge’ levels for each topic. Students can choose to work on each topic at their level of comfort. All materials will be collected together in a Google Classroom site.

In general, we introduce all topics from George Lenchner’s book, Creative Problem Solving, as early in the year as possible so that students are familiar with a topic before they see it at a contest. We then review and add content as the year progresses.

Coaches will hold office hours during set times each week and will answer any questions left in the Google Classroom. During office hours, we may go over problems, have the students work together in small groups, or play math games.

During the year, students have the opportunity to participate in:

  • 5 total Math Olympiads contests
  • Noetic Math Competitions
  • individualized lessons and activities on Math Kangaroo Online

Students are free to participate in as many or as few of these contests as they choose.

Please register before September 13th by clicking below.

Recommended Resources:

Please note these resources are not mandatory; we are just including for your reference.

George Lenchner. Creative Problem Solving. 1983. This is the primary ‘textbook’ used by MOEMS.

George Polya. How to Solve It. 1945. This classic is still used heavily in mathematics circles and is one of the inspirations for Dr. George Lenchner’s book. You can also read via this PDF online

Beast Academy. A set of comic books targeting deeper math concepts for students in 2nd-5th grades.

Youcubed contains numerous math games and apps with a low floor (easy to get started) and a high ceiling (room for deep thought about math concepts).

Glen Ellison. Hard Math for Elementary School. 2013. Each chapter goes deeper on a basic mathematical concept. A good resource for longer-term math projects.

Sandor Lehoczky and Richard Rusczyk. The Art of Problem Solving. Volume 1: The Basics, 7th Edition. 2014. This book has clear descriptions of the most common math concepts used in math contests worldwide.
